GenTruth Award: Aiyoh...Wat Lah! Awards (Malaysia)

Humour can be a powerful tool for change and our winner in this category is proof of that. An annual spoof ceremony organized in Malaysia, the Aiyoh... Wat Lah?! Awards raise awareness on what constitutes sexism, misogyny, homophobia and/or transphobia. They also encourage higher standards of behaviour from public figures and institutions in relation to gender and sexuality. The Awards focus on public statements and actions instead of individuals and institutions.

Organized by the Joint Action Group for Gender Equality (JAG), the Awards have attracted considerable media attention. In 2013, they were covered in nine pre-event news stories and one radio interview and at least eight post-event articles. The Awards attracted more than 1700 votes, and had around 120 audience members.
