Runner-up: Hospersa (South Africa)
HOSPERSA is a South African Trade Union with 68,000 members that has taken steps to eliminate gender discrimination within their organization. When they realised that they were not reaching or hearing the voices of all their members, the union innovatively extended campaigns beyond wage issues. They established forums on HIV/AIDS and TB, Gender and Young Workers among others.
In 2011, the forums were officially launched in all 9 provinces of South Africa with HOSPERSA representatives nominated on each. They were strengthened by a partnership with Gender At Work, and the trade union took steps such as sensitizing their leadership; including gender in their collective bargaining efforts; setting up a sexual harassment policy; and engaging with and providing insights into national policies relating to gender and HIV/AIDS and TB.
